PRESIDENT’S CORNER

 By Julia Long

Happy Thanksgiving! I have much to be thankful for, as does our neighborhood as a whole. To express our mutual thankfulness for those who support the civic club, we have a very special door prize for this month's meeting: a $100 gas card. Yes, one person attending our meeting will go home with a card for $100 worth of free gas for the family car! Be sure when you arrive to sign in with the secretary so that you are eligible for the drawing that will be held near the end of the meeting.

There are those families who are having an especially hard time during this period of economic downturn and high unemployment, and we want to share our spirit of thanksgiving with the children from some of these families. So please bring along with you to the meeting an unwrapped new toy in its original packaging. These will be donated to the toy drive that is led by Debi Chard of TV's Channel 5. And Debi herself has promised to try to drop by our meeting to say thank you for your contribution! No need to make a special shopping trip; most grocery stores and drug stores and other such places also carry at least a few toys this time of year. Make a note to yourself to pick up one or more the next time you're out. (If the toy you've chosen requires batteries, please pick up a package of those too.) These gifts bring unexpected joy and hope to countless children who may otherwise feel unimportant and forgotten.

Also at our meeting, we'll be saying a public thank you to various people who have, through the years, made special and unselfish contributions to help Deer Park remain a safe and family-friendly neighborhood to live in. Some of those people are:  Our Deerwood Station Firefighters, our Speed Team and other Police Officers, Mr. Jimmie Mitchum, Tim Scott, Lucy Herman, Bobby Jameson, Sarah Collins, Lenora Sherrill, Linda Vetter, Wheeler Tillman,  Melinda Chambers, Margot Callahan.

MURPHY OIL

Plans continue for the Murphy Oil Gas Station at the old bank location on the corner of Otranto and Rivers. So far, it looks as though the site will be made as attractive as possible. Murphy Oil will be adding a sidewalk that will greatly enhance the safety of anyone trying to cross the road on foot at that intersection. The city allowed a variance that will keep the station's dumpster in the back corner of the lot instead of right out in full view, and beautiful crepe myrtles will be planted under the electric lines. Any business at that corner will, of course, increase traffic there as cars go in and out, so we will all want to be even more cautious when driving in that area.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ELECTION WINNERS

While focusing on the national elections, it's easy to lose sight of the importance of local elections. Tim Scott is our new House Representative, and Elliott Summey is our new County Council Representative. Both have promised to attend our meetings whenever possible and keep us informed. We'll be looking forward to hearing from them.

BABY CONGRATULATIONS!!

We want to congratulate Dennis and Annette Isgitt on their new grandson, Amir L. Jones.  Amir came into this world on November 5th weighing seven pounds and thirteen ounces.  Amir’s mom, Katie, is also doing well.

Also born recently, on October 18th, Aurora Lillian Martha Sligh, weighing ten pounds and seven and one half ounces.  Aurora is the new granddaughter of Julia Long.  Julia’s daughter, Rebecca Marie, is the proud mom.
