President’s Corner

Monday night is our Chat-With-The-Candidates meeting. We'll have the candidates for our County Council seat and the candidates for our State House seat visiting. This is your opportunity to meet them and ask questions. So come join us for refreshments and chat, and get your chance for a one-on-one conversation with each candidate.  

 

Keep An Eye On Development Near You

 

At any time that development is going on near you, keep an eye on it to make sure everything is happening the way the city law says it should. Recently, a resident spotted bulldozers taking down a stand of trees that had been left as a buffer between business and residential. A fast phone call later, and the city inspector was on the scene. It turns out that the contractors were using the wrong plans, and were going to put the city-required buffer fence in the wrong place. The inspector straightened out the problem quickly. If you see what you think might possibly be improper development, please call either Bobby Jameson or Julia Long (or both) and let them know what's happening. 

 

 

Electrical Sub-Station Property At The End Of Salamander

 

This property is owned by SCE&G, who applied to have it rezoned so that a 160-foot cell phone tower could be placed behind the sub-station.  Rezoning that lot would have meant a business-zoned lot that has to be entered through our residential streets - a bad thing- but that rezoning request has been withdrawn. However, our guess is that the tower will still be built, without a rezoning. Tom Chambers of the SCE&G visited to answer questions It appears that the tower will cause very little increase in traffic, and will bend and crumple up in a major hurricane instead of falling over. If built, it will be placed, as far we know, at least 220-250 feet away from any residential property.

 

Storen And Gable Intersection

 

After investigating the Storen Street and Gable Street intersection, Bobby Jameson and Mr. Lewis of the SCDOT concluded that some more work should be made due to the additional traffic generated by all the new development in that area.  SCDOT should:

 

 

 

 

 

 

1. Trim the brush entering the stop sign on Storen.

2. Trim brush from the stop sign going toward University Blvd down Gable Street.

3. Paint stripes on Storen Street from the stop sign, the length of the new pavement there, and install reflectors.

4. Paint stripes on Gable Street from the stop sign to University Blvd and install reflectors.

5. Relocate the "New stop sign" warning to a better positioning

    If these measures don't improve the situation, they 'll consider a three way stop for that intersection.

 

 

Other Neighborhood Happenings

 

---A pair of very old mobile homes on Selah Street, now empty, did not get city permission to be rented out again. They will need to be replaced with a house.

 

---The construction on Fernwood near University Boulevard is a Hampton Inn, which will have it back to Fernwood. Most of the parking will be between the building and Fernwood, with most of the activity - cars and garbage trucks and such coming and going will be on the front side of the building, and thus not particularly visible from Fernwood.

 

---We don't know yet when construction will start on the bank that is to go in next to the Kerr Pharmacy, but work is starting on the next lot over (between University Boulevard and the new Hampton Inn). It is to be a little retail/shopping area, with the specific shops not yet determined. The uncleared lot on the corner of Fernwood has, as far as we know, not yet been sold.

 

---The lot on Shadow across from the church, between the Korean Methodist Church and the uncleared business property, has been sold to a man who usually does medical development, but it can only be used for residential. It is only a little more than an acre in size, but could hold several homes. 

 

Membership Dues

 

Membership Dues of $10.00 annually are always received any time of the year. If you wish to mail your check in, make your check payable to Linda Brinson and mail it to 2510 Gable St., N. Chas., SC 29406.  If you are not certain whether or not your dues are up to date, please give Linda a call at 553-8832. Ten dollars per year is a small amount to pay for monthly updates on community activities, events, programs, and many matters of concern to each of us. Even if you do not attend the monthly meetings and desire at least to receive the newsletter, please get your dues paid.
