President’s Corner

By Julia Long

I'm excited about the success of our request for the new 52/78 intersection to retain its historic name. There are deeds and other records going back to the 1700's referring to this intersection of old paths as The Antlers, and the original deeds laying out Deer Park also refer to this landmark by that name. A Joint Resolution of the House and the Senate was passed June 1 making the old name official. On Thursday, June 9, Senator Chip Campsen was on the agenda at the North Charleston City Council meeting to bring a "Certificate of Naming." If you were watching the Council meeting on TV, you saw that he was unavoidably detained, but he did present us with the certificate after the meeting.

Jack Garves provided the necessary historical research, and Wheeler Tillman did the other necessary background work. We deeply appreciate Mayor Summey, Councilman Bobby Jameson, Rep. Tom Dantzler, and Sen. Campsen for their help in preserving this important record of our local history. We would like to share the certificate content with you:

S. 899 [introduced by Senator Campsen.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE RECENTLY COMPLETED INTERCHANGE LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF UNITED STATES HIGHWAYS 52 AND 78 IN THE CITY OF NORTH CHARLESTON "THE ANTLERS INTERCHANGE" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THE INTERCHANGE THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "THE ANTLERS INTERCHANGE".

WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation recently completed construction of a new highway interchange in the City of North Charleston located at United States Highways 52 and 78; and

WHEREAS, the newly constructed interchange is adjacent to the Deer Park residential neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, the intersection of United States Highways 52 and 78 for many years was locally known as "The Antlers" because to the eye of the local rural landowners and farmers it resembled the prong of a deer antler; and

WHEREAS, a 1946 plat of the twenty-six tracts of land (the Fernwood to Dantzler corridor) owned by Louis E. Storen and John D. Gable in Deer Park, recorded in the RMC Office for Charleston County in Plat Book F, page 237, describes the location of the tracts as "Near the Antlers, Charleston, South Carolina"; and

WHEREAS, the present-day Deer Park subdivision was so named because of the proximity to the intersection locally know as "The Antlers"; and

WHEREAS, streets in present-day Deer Park subdivision, such as Antler Drive, Fawn Street, Doe Street, Twisted Antler Drive, and Buckfield Drive were so named because of their proximity to the intersection locally known as "The Antlers"; and

WHEREAS, in building the interchange many "Grand Oaks" with over forty inches in diameter at breast height were lost; and

WHEREAS, the Deer Park communities have suffered the loss of this adjacent forest and its wildlife; and

WHEREAS, the residents of the Deer Park communities desire to preserve some of its history and have that history memorialized permanently.

NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

THAT the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the recently completed interchange located at the intersection of United States Highways 52 and 78 in the City of North Charleston "The Antlers Interchange" and erect appropriate markers or signs at the interchange that contain the words "The Antlers Interchange".

Disaster Preparedness

By Jim Brown

As you can see the season is upon us already.  Let us be fully prepared!!  Please make sure you have plenty of the right

kind of supplies including canned goods and non-perishable foods…..enough to last at least three days.  Also, a good

supply of flashlights and batteries, a battery operated radio and don’t forget prescription medicines so that you won’t run

out!  Also, get your generator checked out ahead of time and make sure it’s in good working order.  Evacuation: know the

correct evacuation routes for Deer Park. This would be Hwy#78 if you wait until the last minute.  If you decide to go early

before a mandatory evacuation goes into effect you can go on any road you choose.  Have an Emergency Evacuation Plan

so your family can keep in touch with you.  You don’t want to worry them…keep each other informed.  Hurricane Watch:

24-36 hours; Hurricane Warning: within 24 hours and Hurricane condition exists with winds over 74mph.  After any storm

we will work together as neighbors to restore our community.

Congratulations!!

As a community we want to congratulate Katie Isgitt, daughter of Dennis Isgitt, our Civic Club Vice-President, on joining

the Army National Guard and completing her basic training at Fort Lenardwood, Missouri.  We salute and appreciate all

of our service men and women who serve their country in order to sustain our valued  freedom and liberty!!!  Way to go

           Katie!!

Sick and Sunshine

As a reminder, if any of our members out in our community know of anyone who is ill, has had a recent death in their family, or, perhaps is in need of some encouragement, please give me a call and let me know.  We would like to send them a card appropriate to their circumstances and let them know we are thinking of them and that we care.  Or, on the other side of that, someone may have some exciting news to share about another in our community, i.e. a birth, wedding, etc.  Let me know so that we can remember them with celebration!!
