THE ANTLERS’ SPREAD
PRESIDENT’S CORNERBy Julia Long
Congratulations and thanks are in order for several people:
1. Don Schaffer of Northwood Estates:
Don won the 2006 "Citizen of the Year" award, which was presented to him by Bobby Jameson at the North Charleston annual Citizen Advisory Council Meeting and Banquet on January 4. During 2006 he not only served on the Zoning Board of Appeals, but was secretary of the Northwood Estates Civic League. Don generously volunteers at both the Naval Weapon Station’s thrift shop and the US Air Force Base consignment shop. He also volunteers to remove trash from the entrance islands on Greenridge Rd.
2. Mickie Kelecy of Northwood Estates:
At the same banquet, Bobby presented Mickie with a special achievement award for outstanding leadership and service as past Chairperson of the Citizen Advisory Board . We owe Mickey thanks for helping us with a number of issues, most recently obtaining the promise of a street light at Antler and Otranto.
3. Firefighters at the Deerwood Fire Station:
As if staying in readiness for the emergency calls which can come at any moment weren't enough, the firefighters decorated the station so beautifully last month that they won the city fire stations lighting contest. I hope you had a chance to drive by after dark and see their beautiful handiwork.
4. Mary Hutson of DPNC Civic Club Board:
Mary, I am told by those present, did a superb job of representing us at the last Zoning Board of Appeals meeting. A Neighborhood Office property on Tri Com had filed a variance request asking to be excused from the required front buffer that is so important to maintaining a neat and attractive appearance along our roadways. After Mary spoke, the variance request was denied. Had Mary not taken on this job, there would have been no presentation from our neighborhood; so the Board would have been left believing that we may not care much about the appearance of our streets. It is extremely important that we have a number of people willing to make these presentations as needed. And many thanks to those who attended to support Mary.
REMINDER – IS ANYONE OUT THERE AVAILABLE TO HELP?
We are in great need of someone to do the work of necessary contacts and supervision for the Spring Clean Sweep. Dennis Isgitt will help and furnish all necessary information. If we don't have a volunteer, we may need to skip the Clean Sweep this year, which would be a pity. The roads are very much in need of cleaning. If you would be willing to volunteer your time this year please contact Dennis directly at 797-2455 or email him at dennisisgitt@hotmail.com.
