PRESIDENT’S CORNER
By: Julia Long
This month is our much-anticipated
Christmas party! Please invite someone who doesn't usually attend our meetings,
and join us on Monday for fun and a chance to get to know our neighbors better.
Bring along a finger food to share if you can. I know you're very busy at this
season of the year, but please remember how important it is that we all
take time for our community. Neighborhoods where people know and care about
each other remain good places to live, while neighborhoods with no sense of
community tend gradually to go downhill. Take an evening to show your support
for keeping Deer Park the kind of place that supports families and good
relationships.
OVERHEAD LIGHTING CHANGE
As we mentioned in last month's
newsletter, the city would like to change the lighting ordinance. The idea
apparently is to allow poles six feet higher than present on commercial
property, and twelve feet higher than present for industrial properties. Using
the feedback given from the neighborhood in the last month, our position now is
that we will fight to get the new ordinance to contain a restriction keeping
higher poles a minimum of 100 feet away from any R-1 property. Again, if you
have an opinion, please speak to someone on our board as soon as possible.
OTRANTO LIBRARY
RE-OPENS
By: Paul A.
Bryan, Pre-Professional Librarian, Charleston County Public Library
The
Otranto Road Regional Library of the Charleston County Public Library completed
its renovation and re-opened to the public at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 13. The
library has a fresh, new look with tinted windows, fresh paint, new carpeting,
refinished wooden units, reupholstered chairs and new computer workstations.
The branch is located at 2261 Otranto Road, just behind the Super K-Mart on
Rivers Avenue, and consists of 14,000 square feet with an auditorium and small
conference space. Last year, Otranto Road Regional had more than 185,000 user
visits and hosted more than 200 programs that drew over 10,000 patrons. The
facility has a collection of nearly 100,000 volumes. The different paint color
scheme has a softer, more relaxed tone that makes visitors feel more at home.
Other renovation work included putting new wall surfaces in the auditorium, new
carpet and tile in the staff work areas, and new countertops and sinks in the
restrooms. The Otranto Road Regional phone number is (843) 572-4094, and you
can find information on upcoming programs and events at the branch or online
(www.ccpl.org) under “Programs and Events. “ We welcome you to come and
experience our new atmosphere here at Otranto.
