President’s Corner

By Julia Long

Please mark your calendar now for the September re-starting of our regular meetings at 6:30 on the third Monday night of each month, at the Deer Park Church Fellowship Hall. The September meeting is Come-Meet-Your-Neighbors night. Bring a finger food if you can, but even if you can't bring anything, come anyway. We don't get many chances to socialize with others in our community, and it's important for us to know each other. Invite your Deer Park friends and relatives whether they belong to the civic club or not. Our City Councilman Bobby Jameson will get us all caught up on how Deer Park is developing and growing: there's a lot to know!

And speaking of Bobby Jameson, let's all remember to tell him personally how much we appreciate the four-way stop at Fernwood and Deerwood. It took considerable effort and persistence on his part to get those new stop signs put in. They will reduce property damages, prevent injuries, and very likely save lives.

For those who need rides to the hospital area, please note that the route of our Bus 106 has been changed so that it now goes all the way to Health South .

There's a rumour that we might be getting a Kerr Drug on our side of University Boulevard near Shadow Lane. Let's hope it's true. I'll let you know if I hear anything more definite.

Operation Evacuation Disability Emergency Planning Assessment

Disabled residents of Charleston County are often uncertain about what to do in times of emergency. Evacuation instructions can be confusing and overwhelming. A new registry for people with disabilities who may need assistance in an emergency evacuation is being established. This registry is an important first step in locating, assessing and assisting people with disabilities in times of emergency. The Committee for Disability Emergency Preparedness is developing this registry. It is called “Operation Evacuation.”

Any resident with disabilities who thinks they may need evacuation assistance or shelter during an emergency should contact “Operation Evacuation” by calling 211 or 225-5080. The operators will direct you to the next step toward being included in the “Operation Evacuation” registry. The assessment form is also available online at www.drcilc.org. Or (in Deer Park) contact Dennis Isgitt at 797-2455 for a copy of the form. The form is not complicated with just a few basic questions.

The Disability Resource Center is also attempting to develop a network to address specific needs of individuals through churches and other organizations. This is in the early development stages.

For any emergency assistance program to work, planning is essential. You have to take the first step to help yourself BEFORE the emergency is here. Help yourself and register. TODAY.

Remember Your Neighbors!!

Longtime DPNC member/friend/neighbor, Lucy Herman recently suffered a heart attack and was in Trident Hospital.  We are so very happy to report that Lucy has improved enough to be sent home from the hospital. Cheers!!!

Board member Mary Hutson’s son had fallen and broken his leg.  He’s been operated on and we have every hope that his leg will heal rapidly.

Our sympathies to the congregation at Northwood’s Assembly Church for the fire damages there.  Once again, our own North Charleston Fire Department,  who were part of a larger group of the Charleston areas’ firefighters, were on the scene to help battle and contain this tragic fire. We are very glad that no one was injured and we do hope to see them rebuilding soon.
