President’s Corner

By Julia Long

We won FIRST PRIZE Saturday, April 9, in our division of the North Charleston City Clean Sweep!

A thousand thanks to everyone who helped out.

Dennis Isgitt did a superb job of planning and organizing this event. We picked up a lot of trash, ate a lot of barbeque, and had a lot of fun.

Residents from all over Deer Park joined in the clean up, with welcome extra help from members of the North Charleston Fire Department, Officer Lewis from the Police Department, a number of Citadel Cadets, an energetic group from Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cub Scout Pack 469, a grandmother and granddaughter from Goose Creek, and a surprise visit from Mayor Summey! A total of 56 people signed in on Saturday; in addition, there were other hard-working Deer Park residents who had already done clean-ups during the preceding week. Some highlights of the week’s accomplishments were that at least 80 bags of trash were picked up, flower seeds were planted at a public entrance, used but still useful clothing is headed to the Good Will, and the ditches and storm drain were cleared at one end of Antler.

Obviously, there are even more tasks that could be done to improve the appearance and safety of our neighborhood, so why not make plans now to join us next year for City Clean Sweep? Everyone working together is what really makes a community.

The North Charleston Art Festival this year will be April 29-May 7; for further information, call 745-1087. There will also be Earth Day events for children, held on April 25 at Park Circle. SC Stroke Summit will be held April 30 in Orangeburg.  Kim Keenes of the I’On group described a plan for the “Mixon Avenue Project,” which would eventually be a village-like area of houses, condos, apartments, and locally-based businesses.
